Discover Naples
Naples can be a challenge if you're accustomed to more tourist-friendly cities like Florence or Rome, but with a little bit of preparation you can experience the best of this fascinating capital of Southern Italy.
Located between the Gulf of Naples and the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius, the sprawling city of Naples has a fairly small historic center and plenty of attractions to keep you entertained. It's a popular home base for day trips to Pompeii, but many of the best artifacts from the city ruins are in Naples' spectacular National Archaeological Museum. Italy's beloved Christmas Nativity scenes are big business all year long in Naples — the tiny Via San Gregorio Armeno is lined with shops selling everything you'll need to build your very own. Naples was once known as the "City of Seven Castles," three of which are top attractions today. There's a dense ricotta-filled pastry that's a Neapolitan specialty, and, of course, there's the pizza. Sure, you can get pizza all over Italy (and the rest of the world) nowadays, but Naples is where it was born and perfected.
Naples has long been a popular jumping-off point for exploring nearby Pompeii or the Amalfi Coast, and it still is. Before you head out of town, though, give this gritty city a chance to find its way into your heart. The rewards here are pretty great if you're willing to give Naples a chance.
